In These Anxious Days, What Would Jesus Do?

Standard

These are challenging times. We are surrounded by anxiety, and rightfully so. Never have we Americans seen the dangers of a pandemic or such related collapse of economy.

As a prayer person, and a licensed professional counselor, I feel compelled to deliver a warning: We Christians must, more than ever, be asking ourselves frequently, “What would Jesus do?”

I know that sounds like a, “Well, DUH!” statement. All those faithful in Christ want to do what Jesus would do.

But how do we do what Jesus would do in times of pandemic and economic disaster?

I wonder if Jesus would have acted like some Christians I am acquainted with? Christians are people too, and anxious people sometimes tend to handle high anxiety by becoming angry, selfish, accusatory or giving up their kingdom leadership responsibilities and latching onto vociferous leaders who may be wolves in sheep’s clothing.

We were born again into leadership, each of us who follow Christ are called into God’s kingdom as kings and priests (Revelation 1:6). We are also called to follow Christ’s leadership.

So, how would Jesus lead during pandemic and economic disaster? In his stressful times, he taught his disciples to be servers, givers, healers and hope inspirers for the broken world around them.

Can you imagine what it would be like, at the end of this pandemic, to be the people who inspired as much hope in the world around us as the healthcare workers, delivery people, and grocery store clerks have done?

How can we inspire and help others when we are quarantined and/ or struggling financially ourselves?

Little things count.

All through Scripture there are stories of small, unimportant people who did big things. (Look up folks like Joanna, Suzanna, and Jael, for instance.)

We may not be big, famous, important people in the practical sense, but I feel certain that God may be calling us to make a courageous, world-changing impact right where we are. We may be unimportant people, but we can make a difference!

We Christians can lead our nation and our communities by asking ourselves, “What would Jesus do during this pandemic and economic disaster?” Then we can model ourselves after Christ’s example. We can be a people who are:

  • For things rather than against things
    • When you are against things, you can “rile people” up quickly but you cannot get much godly stuff done with rile. Riled-up folks will follow anyone who gives them relief. If you watch carefully, bad players often step into these times of chaos. These are people who are seeking attention, power or riches. They are rarely seeking the good of those they are “leading”. They are simply opportunists who will give the illusion of leading but in truth they are manipulating an anxious public to get themselves ahead.
    • Beware of the bad players. Instead, try fulfilling your leadership responsibilities by giving anxious people a vision! Remind them: These are hard times but we can get through this by looking out for others as well as ourselves.
    • Share with your friends and family this visionary question: What would you like for your lives to be like during quarantine, during re-opening and while facing a new normal? What can you do to work toward that, for yourselves and your neighbors?
    • Keep asking yourself: What good news am I sharing, giving and living?
  • Fruit bearers
    • Whatever you read, whatever you listen to (for instance: social media and the news), whatever you say or however you act is leading you on a road to creating something in your future (and the future of other folks in your sphere of influence), whether you or they want that something or not.
    • Ask yourself, is what I am reading, listening to, saying or doing leading me to:
      • Faith, hope and love (1 Corinthians 12 and 13)
      • Fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control? (Galatians 5:22-23)
        • If not, do you want to be praying about what God would like to you be moving towards?
        • Would you pray that God would work in you to will and to do HIS good pleasure? (Philippians 2:13)
        • Would you pray that he help you to press onto the prize of HIS high calling for you in Christ? (Philippians 3:14)
      • Ask yourself: What good news am I sharing, giving and living?
      • Sometimes God does call us to take a stand. Ask yourself these questions,
        • “When I am standing up for something, is that something I am taking a stand on: MYSELF or someone who can’t stand up for themselves?”
        • “When I am standing up for something, am I able to represent Christ as I do so?”
        • “Is the fruit of the Spirit evident in my behavior and in the leadership I am standing with?”
        • “Are people drawn to the good news by what I am doing?”
      • (BTW- I’m talking about taking a stand in the world. In a personal relationship, assertiveness is a healthy kind of standing up for yourself.)
  • Discernment
    • 1 John 4:1 tells us to try the spirit, because not all spirits are of God. When life gets chaotic and scary, even Christians can listen to the wrong spirits. These are chaotic and scary times. We must pray and ask ourselves:
      • What would Jesus do with this information?
      • What would he do next?
      • Will people see Christ in me if I engage in…?”
      • What good fruit am I showing, sharing, giving and living?
  • Service
    • God called us to justice, mercy and humility. (He has shown you, oh man, what is good: and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8)
      • Be careful with the word “justice”. We Americans often feel that justice means “getting even”. However, the Hebrew word “Mishpat” carries the connotation of doing what is right, including looking out for those who do not not have a fair shake in life. Standing up for and looking our for the weak and marginalized. Doing good deeds, especially when you don’t expect a direct return.
    • If we look at the word “justice” through that lens, how would we:
      • Handle our own positions during this pandemic?
      • Handle the crises of safety, health, lack of resources of:
  1. the families in your church that are struggling economically or who lost a loved one.
  2. the small businesses in your community
  3. poor in our inner cities
  4. the Native Americans, the reservations of some which are harder hit with COVID-19, percentage-wise, than any other place in the nation
  5. the immigrants who have no resources or connections

The word “mercy” means to show oneself kind. Can you ask yourself daily, “Did I show kindness today?

Walk Humbly with your God.

The word “humility” connotes teachableness. At this perilous time in history, we desperately need to be available and listening to Christ’s teachings and role modeling, to the leading of the Holy Spirit. We must be wary of the teachings of bad players. Humility keeps us calm and available to learn God’s ways to handle pandemics and economic disasters.

Humility is also the opposite of self-absorption. As C.S. Lewis aptly put it: Humility does not mean thinking less about yourself, it means thinking about yourself less. How have you walked humbly with God today?

What good news are you living in justice, mercy and humility?

Here’s a tough question: If Christ came back tomorrow, would He find you engaged in fruit, justice, service, discernment… in spreading the good news? Or would He find you using his name to engage in inflammatory, destructive politicking, power-grabbing or looking out for only you and yours. (As the apocryphal prayer goes: God, look out for me, my wife, my kids. Us four, no more.)

If Christ came back tomorrow, would he find you neglecting to lead like him, neglecting to look, think and act like him? How would He respond? How would you feel?

This doesn’t mean that you should not be involved in politics or in praying for your family. I personally am engaged in both. But I believe I have a primary mission, and I believe other Christians do, too:

  • To live the good news, that others see Christ in us and are drawn to that light of love.
  • Seek FIRST the kingdom of God.
  • Then all those things (in this case, His wisdom on what to do, when, how much, and what method) will be added to you.

So how do you handle the real, realities in this anxiety-provoking world?

Pray. As my friend, Kym, says, “Pray first, last and always.” Here’s a helpful formula:

  • We should spend as much time in prayer for our nation and world as we do on social media speaking out about things.
    • And when we take a public stand ask yourself: Is this stand a stand that is FOR someone and IN the fruit of the spirit?
  • One way to pray is silence. Go before the Lord and sit with Him, perhaps let the Holy Spirit pray through you in “groanings that cannot be uttered”. (Romans 8:26) God does not need words for your prayer to matter or be heard. He wants your presence and obedience.
  • Write your elected officials: State and National. Let them know what you are concerned about, especially keeping in mind those who are unimportant or marginalized and thus, and cannot speak for themselves. Write to them about it.
  • Give, serve and lead in whatever organizations and causes, impelled by the good news of Christ’s leading and fruit.
  • Do practical things aligned with God’s leading. Check what you are feeling against these ideas that we just discussed:
  • What are you for?
  • What fruit will you show?
  • What discernment are you receiving from God?
  • How is it leading you to service?

May we followers of Christ come out of this pandemic being and living more like Christ.

5 Christian Responsibilities to the Nation in Light of Scripture

Standard

Praying together for the nationWhat a drab title!

However, that’s what I need to talk about: Christian responsibility to the nation in light of Scripture.

This is not about guilt: we can’t be perfect followers of Christ. (Few of us have time to move to a monastery and spend our days totally devoted to prayer and fasting.) However, we live in a day, where we Christians could seriously up our game. We have responsibilities.

There are mid-term elections coming up. We should definitely use our voices in casting our votes. Even more important, we need to is to get our priorities straight. If we do so, when we vote, we’ll hopefully have not only voted our conscience but also God’s will (rather than voting our political party’s conscience or social media’s pressure).

So, here are 5 Christian responsibilities in light of Scripture that we need to use to recalibrate ourselves:

Responsibility #1: Pray

I Timothy 2:1-2

I exhort therefore, that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercession, and giving of thanks be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. KJV

Seriously. Pray for our nation daily. No matter what we think about the people in charge of the nation, we need to pray for them to follow God’s directives, not their own greed, lust, confusion, or political pressures. We also need to pray for all people (not just *me and mine*).

What would happen if Christians truly prayed for all people, for leaders, for authority figures: that they follow God’s wisdom, guidance and goodness? What if we prayed for them to live in truth, to fulfill God’s mission (rather than their own)? Can you imagine a nation where the people, leaders and authority figures lived like that?

Responsibility #2: Live the Big 3: Justice, Mercy, Humility

There are 3 things God has shown us to do in order to live like He’s shown us to live:

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O Man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. (KJV with Vicki’s updated verbs and pronouns)

Live the Big 3: Justice (Do justly)

This means to do what is right and just toward people and God’s creation. The word *justly* here is *mishpat*, which can be translated as *good deeds*.

Responsibility #3: Live the Big 3: Mercy

Love mercy

This means to place high value in mercy. The Hebrew word for *mercy* is *chesed*, which connotes having loving-kindness toward people; and reverence and respect towards God.

Responsibility #4: Live the Big 3: Humility

Walk humbly with your God

Remember, we have the warning that pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18) We need to live with the consciousness that God is with us and attentive towards us. What would humility look like if we really believed that the God of the universe was watching us?

Responsibility #5: Seek God’s face, turning from our own wicked ways

Look at 2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and heal their land. KJV

Before we vote, before we post on social media, what if we do 2 things:

  • Seek God’s face
  • Turn from our *wicked ways* (biased presuppositions, selfishness, gullible-ness, stubbornness, greed, hopelessness)

What if we genuinely walk 2 Chronicles 7:14 with clear mind and conscience? What could God do through us and in our nation if we got the party pressures, social media pressures, peer pressures out of our hearts and concentrated on what God wants to do?

I’m praying daily for my nation. Want to join me? I’m going to work on justice, mercy, humility, seeking God’s face and turning from my own wicked ways. Want to give it a try? Let’s see what God wants to do!

I am starting a Facebook group for praying for our nation. I am endeavoring on Monday mornings to FB live a prayer for the nation for others to watch or join, plus a daily prayer for the nation. I will do this until the midterm elections, and if God leads, longer. Would you like to join me there?

2 Kinds of Alternative Facts and What to do About it

2 Kinds of Alternative Facts and What to do About it

Here are 2 kinds of alternative facts and what to do about it.

There’s been lots of hype about the new administration’s use of what they call “alternative facts”. I want to clarify for anyone who might be confused about them.

  • There are alternative facts.
  • There are 2 kinds of alternative facts.

The first kind of alternative fact is the kind that has a bit of truth in it but has been laced with misinformation by the fact-giver in order to achieve a personal end. This end could be:

  • Less embarrassment
  • Manipulation of the populace to behave in a manner that gets the fact-giver what he wants

A great illustration of this from children’s literature is C.S. Lewis’ The Last Battle. You might remember that in this last book from The Chronicles of Narnia, leaders used alternative facts to conquer Narnia without battle- by enslaving the people one at a time.

They did this by:

  • taking famous Narnian sayings and twisting them just a little. The gullible population who had not studied Narnian history nor learned by heart the actual sayings were quickly lured into slavery for these leaders profit-motivated ends.
  • lying about Aslan’s nature and desires. Because the Narnians had become fat, happy and lazy- caught up in their own good lives, they had forgotten to know Aslan, to know his character and his will. Thus when evil-doers lied to them about what Aslan wanted, they followed blindly along.

What to do about it?

Know for yourself, by prayer and study of God’s word, God’s character and will and what God says about:

  • Greed (Check out Ephesians 4)
  • Arrogance (Check out Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. biblegateway.com)
  • Poor treatment of the poor, disadvantaged, stranger, disabled (Here are 2 of many Scriptures: But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 19:34 BibleHub.com and Matthew 25:45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. Biblegateway.com)

Learn discernment. Discernment comes by prayer and holding up behavior and things spoken to Christ’s own words. See these verses:

I John 4:1

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. biblegateway.com

Luke 6:43-45

A good tree does not bring forth corrupt fruit. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.

A good man out of the treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good. An evil man out of the treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil. For out of the abundance of his heart a man speaks.

A man who speaks alternative facts is a man with an alternative reality. One that will bring forth out of the abundance of greed, arrogance and use of people and resources to his own gain. His alternative facts are meant to deceive and enslave.

Discern. Know God. Don’t be like the lazy Narnians in The Last Battle.

******************************************

So what about the OTHER kind of alternative fact?

The other alternative facts are God’s facts. Allow me to explain:

We live in a 3 dimensional world. We are often encouraged to believe only things we can see, hear and touch.

But God’s reality is bigger than that. He has not limited himself nor his angels to a 3 dimensional world.

Our world is a mess and being led by messy men. It is like the days of old when the prophet Elisha and his servant had pissed off the king of the Syria. The king sent his army to arrest the prophet.

Elisha’s servant gets up in the morning and sees the house surrounded by an army. In a panic, he wakens Elisha. Elisha calmly prays: Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. II Kings 6 biblegateway.com

The Syrian army was there. God’s army was there, too. And actually, God’s army was MORE REAL than the tangible army. God’s army was there. Ready to KICK BUTT.

But then God gave Elisha His words and Elisha, obedient to God, spoke them: Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And God smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

2 Kinds of Alternative Facts and What to do About It

Elisha had made himself available to God and to the way that God works so he was able to “see” things that are not limited to the 3D world.

Elisha had made himself available to God and to the way that God works so he was able to speak things that are not limited to the 3D world.

THUS were the evil intentions of the king thwarted.

**********************************************************************

So listen to me please.

  • Do not be as the gullible who do not know God, his words or his ways. Pray. Know Him through Scripture so that you are not lured away from the truth of God.
  • Do not fear like those who have no hope nor help. We serve the God of the universe who has His limitless power and legions of angels to do His bidding.
  • Do not run amok trying to accomplish God’s will for Him. Seek Him first. He’ll tell you what and how. And He WILL tell you what and how, and you WILL need to obey.
  • Read my post on how not to be a loser.

Thus, there are 2 kinds of alternative facts:

  • One is laced with lies and will lead to destruction.
  • One is more real than our earthly reality, full of God’s love, power and life. It leads to love, power and life. I recommend choosing this kind of alternative fact.

yup

How Not to be a Loser

Standard

how-not-to-be-a-loser

You don’t want to be a loser, right? (Not quoting anyone, right?)

Anyway, I reckon a loser might be someone who refuses to pull their spiritual weight in a time of great need.

If you want to be a true contributor to the spiritual condition of our nation and our national government, please dedicate yourself to these things:

*Pray for the leaders. No matter who they are, we have a biblical mandate in I Timothy 2:1-2

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings, and for all that are in authority…

*Pray in personal repentance for the nation. Sometimes we don’t like to think that we good Christians need to be repenting, but the mandate is there. God commanded Solomon that when rotten stuff happens:

If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and heal their land.

There’s plenty of rotten stuff right now, so I reckon this is a good time for repentance and prayer. I wonder if a loser would think he didn’t have anything to repent of?

lightstock_380631_small_user_5486718

*Stand with, stand up for and do what you can to help: the weak, the defenseless, the poor, the widow, the orphan, the stranger in our land. (But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 19:34 BibleHub.com).

This is not a time to sit in our spiritual comfy chairs, making ourselves richer and self-consumed, like the rich man in Luke 12 who decided to tear down his barns to make bigger ones to hold all his goods- that night God required his life. I reckon that guy was a loser…

A contributing Christian is looking out for those who cannot look out for or defend themselves. As James 1:23,27 says:

Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves…Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

And Isaiah 58:6

Is not this the fast I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?

*Be more gracious in your speech than ever. Bullies and uncouth people mock, jeer, and humiliate others. A loser has so little goodness that he must resort to such things. This is not the behavior of a child of God.

Colossians 4:6

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how ye ought to answer every man.

There may be a time when you may need to assertively call someone in authority a “white-washed sepulcher”. Jesus did. God will let a humble and repentant soul know when that needs to be said.

Bullied Bullying Scare Torment Force Concept

*Do not fear. That’s what bullies and sick people want you to do. If you fear, they have control over you.

INSTEAD: Remember, you are the child of the Living God, the dunamis power of the Holy Spirit dwells in you.

I remember the old Southern “blessing”, when uppity people need to be put in their place. We’d look at that person and say: “Well, bless your heart.”

It follows Christ’s exhortation in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:44):

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them that despitefully use you, and persecute you.

*Overcome that evil with good (that’ll heap some coals of fire on his head)…Romans 12: 20-21. Every time there is an evil, go out and make something good happen. A loser would harm, belittle or take advantage of people for his own greed and lust. Let’s fill our nation with so much good it makes evil fearful!

*Find things of beauty. All creation is praising God- you do it, too. Find a sunset, a bird, a river, a painting, a song. Don’t be so overwhelmed with the losers in the world that you miss the gifts God is giving you.

This is a time for prayer, courage and virtue in the power of the Holy Spirit. May it be a time we Christians are not losers, but instead: glorify God.
