Today, we conclude the novena for our nation. This novena has been nine days of prayer for asking for God’s intervention to help our nation return to the ethics and values of our founding and guiding documents, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

In today’s prayer, I am praying that our nation repent and return to the founding ideas in our Constitution. The Preamble to the Constitution:

The Preamble to the U.S. Constitution

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

Scripture gives us the responsibility to pray and intercede for leaders and all people with the result that there can be peaceful and quiet lives. God gave us this responsibility. It is our part to do as citizens!

For the format of this novena prayer, I am using II Chronicles 7:14. As you know, God knew that nations would often forget who and how His people should be. Therefore, in this verse, he gave them instructions on how to recalibrate are return to him, thus giving their nation a chance to be who and how He made them to be. The instructions are in II Chronicles 7:14:

“If MY people who are called by my name will HUMBLE THEMSELVES and PRAY, and seek my face and TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS, then will I hear from heaven and forgive their sins and heal their land.” (KJV)

Here is today’s novena. Today we are praying for the return of our nation to the founding values, ethics, and the responsibility to pray.

Our Father,

Through your Son, Jesus Christ, you have given us the honor and grace to call ourselves by your name. You gave those of us in the United States a nation founded upon the ideas that all people are created equal in Your image and that You endowed all people with natural rights. Along with those rights, you gave us responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is to pray for all people and for leaders in particular so that we all can live peaceful and quiet lives.

Therefore, we are praying and seeking Your face, the face of the only wise God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our nation desperately needs Your help and intervention.

For my part in the falling away from our responsibility to pray and intercede as You have instructed us. God, I am truly sorry, and I humbly repent of seeing some others as people that I can look down upon and not doing all I can for the general welfare of people.

I am humbly praying that You will hear from heaven, move in the hearts and souls of Your people, and forgive our sins. Please, in Jesus’ Name, heal our land.

Amen.

Today, we are remembering our constitutional mandate to secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity. In the year 2024, our nation has not been securing the blessings of liberty. Instead, our nation has been marked by government initiated acts of intimidation, fear, and violence against people in our country and outside our borders.

Scripture gives us the responsibility to pray and intercede for leaders and all people with the result that there can be peaceful and quiet lives. God gave us this responsibility. It is our part to do as citizens!

In today’s prayer, I am praying that our nation repent and return to the founding ideas in our Constitution. The Preamble to the Constitution:

Today, we are remembering our constitutional mandate to promote the general Welfare. Another word for “welfare” is “well-being”. Our nation’s leaders have been working hard on UNpromoting the general welfare: SNAP withheld, ACA insurance credits lost, federal employees put on leave and unpaid, humans who look hispanic being cruelly detained in concentration camps, etc.

Scripture gives us the responsibility to pray and intercede for leaders and all people with the result that there can be peaceful and quiet lives. God gave us this responsibility. It is our part to do as citizens!

Today, we are remembering our constitutional mandate to “establish justice”. This mandate is taken directly from Micah 6:8:

The word “justice” in Hebrew is “sedaqa”. It means to do what is right, true, and moral. It can refer to rulers in the land, but as Micah 6:8, we see that God expects ALL of us to behave justly- to do what is right, true, and moral each day.

A novena is simply nine days of prayer for a specific need. This novena is asking for God’s intervention to help our nation return to the ethics and values of our founding and guiding documents, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

In today’s prayer, I am praying that our nation repent and return to the founding idea that all people of have, because of the gift our God, the unalienable right to liberty. Our Declaration of Independence says:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Today, we are remembering and praying about our unalienable right to the pursuit of happiness. In order to be happy, we must feel safe. One facet of our safety in the United States is our right to speak out, write what we think, worship in any way we feel led, and trust that we have due process in any area of our lives. These unalienable rights are codified in the Constitution’s Bill of Rights.

The right to pursuing happiness is a core natural right. It is also reinforced in the Bill of Rights in our Constitution. (You can check out the YouTube lessons where I explain the Bill of Rights.)

In today’s prayer, I am praying that our nation repent and return to the founding idea that all people of have, because of the gift our God, the unalienable right to liberty. Our Declaration of Independence says:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

We Americans all know the Scripture that is engraved on our Liberty Bell (Leviticus 25:10):

“Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.”

A Novena for Our Nation: Day 2

Day 2 Novena for our nation:

A novena is simply nine days of prayer for a specific need. This novena is asking for God’s intervention to help our nation return to the ethics and values of our founding and guiding documents, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

In today’s prayer, I am praying that our nation repent and return to the founding idea that all people of have, because of the gift our God, the unaleinable right to life. Our Declaration of Independence says:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

We followers of Christ know that from the time God created Adam and breathed into him the breath of life, God has placed value on our human lives. We humans have a responsibility to treat other humans with that “unalienable right to life”. Thus, treating humans in a dangerous or inhumane way is antithetical to our founding values as a nation and the values of our God.

A Novena for Our Nation: Day 1

Day 1 Novena for our nation:

First, let me acknowledge that the tradition of praying a novena is a Catholic tradition. I am not attempting to engage in cultural appropriation, but showing a respect for a part of the body of Christ that knows the necessity of setting aside prayer times for specific needs.

This novena (9 days of prayer for a specific need) is for our nation to return to the ethics and values of our founding and guiding documents, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

In today’s prayer, I am praying that our nation repent and return to the founding idea that all people are created equal. We followers of Christ know this. We revere the Scriptures and a founding and guiding Scripture is Genesis 1:27:

So God created mankind in his own image,
    in the image of God he created them;
    male and female he created them.

We were all created in His image. Thus, there is no such thing as “less than” in His sight.

God, the Second Law of Thermodynamics, and the U.S.

Long ago, when I was a kid in college, I was a biology major. Back in those days, we had to prove our salt as budding scientists by being able to list and describe the five laws of thermodynamics (the physical laws that describe how the universe works).

I can’t remember the other four laws, but the second law of thermodynamics got under my skin and I’ve never been able to quit thinking about it. The second law of thermodynamics is the “law of entropy”. Basically, it says that “everything falls apart eventually”.

When we look around us, we can see that the second law is always at work: an acorn falls into the ground, grows into a tree, eventually dies and falls down, and becomes part of the earth again…

Even suns, solar systems, and galaxies eventually die.

Whether we attribute this to Adam’s fall or that God wanted things this side of eternity to have a shelf life is up to the scientists and theologians. All I know it that, in God’s universe, the second law of the universe is working.

HOWEVER, God gave us humans some limited ability to push back on that second law.

In my job as a counselor, I saw the second law of thermodynamics at work in marriages. Good marriages, over long periods, can fall apart. However, those who continually work at growth, creativity, and caring for themselves and others, tend to break that law. Instead of crumbling, their marriage strengthens over the years.

That doesn’t mean we have the power of eternity. We humans live in temporal bodies, which are eventually subject to the second law of thermodynamics. We will someday leave our bodies and enter eternity.

Western culture and the second law of thermodynamics

I attended a conference this weekend, which was attempting to address our national polarization by becoming focused on creating a loving community within the body of Christ and our national culture.

One of the speakers briefly reviewed the history of great empires. Each of these empires had a shelf life. Eventually, the second law of thermodynamics took over, creating chaos and ending each empire.

This speaker proposed that we are seeing the same empire-ending chaos in Western culture, particularly the U.S. He was not trying to spread despair. Instead, he was proposing that if each of us did the good that God gives us to do, that good is greater than evil (Romans 12:21).

It reminded me of the work I have done with couples. Those who are willing to work at growth, creativity, and caring for themselves and others, do well.

Nations that are willing to work at work at growth, creativity, and caring for themselves and others have a chance to survive.

I invite you to think about the second law of thermodynamics. Do you see it at work in your life? Do you feel it at work in our nation?

If so, I invite you first to pray and meditate on the instructions Jesus gave to us, starting with Mark 12: 30-31:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[a] 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] There is no commandment greater than these.” (Biblegateway.com)

Then ask God what is yours to do that is creative or caring. Then start doing it. Daily.

Let’s do what we can to love God, our neighbor, and ourselves, and overcome evil with good. Maybe together we can hold back the second law of thermodynamics.
